As momentum builds up for the UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP 26) to be held in Glasgow, later this year, the CCCCC and the CARICOM Secretariat will convene a workshop on September 6 to discuss Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The workshop is targeted at CARICOM Ministers of Environment and Minsters of Foreign Affairs along with climate negotiators, and technical experts.  The main topics for the workshop are informed by the outcomes of the CARICOM Virtual Preparatory Meeting and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Caribbean Climate Negotiators Meeting that were both held in July.

During the 2-hour session, discussions will be centred on distilling outstanding technical issues related to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, the consequent implications, as well as a discussion around the actions necessary to adopt the Article at COP 26.  The workshop will elaborate on the following modules:

  1. Article 6 overview: what it entails in its provisions
  2. Accounting, double-counting and corresponding adjustments
  3. Baselines and additionality
  4. Carry-over of KP units/activities and implications
  5. Negotiating issues and what needs to be decided at COP 26
