With the urgent need to nearly halve global emissions by 2030 to cap the global temperature rise at 1.5 degree Celsius, this episode tackles the concept of ‘keeping 1.5 alive.’ It reflects on the mitigation efforts since the Paris Agreement, what to expect on fossil fuel negotiations at COP28, examines net zero pledges, industry transitions and the race to the towards decarbonization. The discussion also highlights the Mitigation Work Programme established by the UNFCCC and what COP28 needs to achieve to honour the Paris Agreement by 2030.
In this episode, our focus shifts to loss and damage and climate finance – two topics expected to take centre stage at COP28 negotiations. The conversation covers the operationalization of the loss and damage fund – from its landmark agreement at COP27 to its expectations at COP28, the impact of the Bridgetown Initiative and what must be done to fulfil the Paris Agreement’s aims by 2030.
