On June 16, 2021, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Eastern and Southern Caribbean Mission (ESC) kicks off an eight-session climate change symposium. From June 16 to 30, 2021, speakers from high-level USAID/ESC and its partners will discuss the ecological and human dimensions of climate change, contextualize the Eastern and Southern Caribbean region’s response, and seek solutions to address impacts.

Tomorrow’s opening session, which starts at 9:00 am EST, will feature remarks from high-level U.S Government officials and partners and a live signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between regional organizations, including the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, and USAID. The session will also include a poetry reading from award-winning poet Deneka Thomas from Trinidad and Tobago.

The second session, Climate Experts Explore Current Impacts and Future Projections of Climate Change, starts immediately after the opening at 10:20 am EST and will focus on interactions between climate change and people in the region highlighting current, effective tools for addressing impacts. The event will feature climate science specialists from the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, and the University of the West Indies.
