Use rechargeable batteries instead of throwaway batteries in devices that need standard batteries. Batteries contain a number of chemicals that are considered toxic such as acid, lead, nickel, lithium, cadmium, alkaline, mercury and nickel metal hydride.  The batteries that are thrown into the landfills will eventually breakdown and leach into the environment causing contamination to the soil and ground water.

By utilizing rechargeable batteries you will also reduce the waste generated from the single use battery packaging, perhaps even reducing greenhouse gases by cutting down trips to the store.  Rechargeable batteries come in many different shapes and sizes and you can easily find different types that you need for your household products.
