Enhancing Capacity for Adaptation to Climate Change (ECACC) in the UK Caribbean Overseas Territories Project
Main objective of the ECACC project was to support efforts by the United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOT) in the Caribbean to adapt to climate change and climate variability within the context of sustainable development.
The identified UKOTs are Anguilla, British Virgin Islands (BVI), Cayman Islands (CI), Montserrat, and Turks and Caicos Islands.
This project was funded by the Department for International Development (DFID) and was implemented by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC). The project started in April 2007 and ended in 2011.
The objective of the project was successfully achieved including:
(1) Establishment of National Climate Change Committees in each of the Overseas Territories (Anguila, British Virgin Island, Cayman, Montserrat and Turks and Caicos),
(2) Development of public education and outreach (PEO) programmes in each OT that have been implemented,
(3) Completion of their Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) using the methodology developed under the MACC Project, and
(4) Development of climate change policy document for each
The Project will allow participating territories to have enhanced capacity to benefit from regional climate change adaptation programmes and will have initiated the integration of the outputs of these into national development planning processes.
Through the CCCCC, the territories will also benefit from its growing links with international institutions involved with climate change research, including those in the UK. It is expected that the engagement of the CCCCC in the UK Overseas Territories will enhance the rationale for the further development of the CCCCC’s links with the Hadley Centre, the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, and the UK Climate Impacts Programme.
