Haiti, as one of the most vulnerable countries from the Caribbean, is facing different impacts due to climate change and variability. Some of these natural issues have impacted sectors throughout the country including agriculture, services, energy, and infrastructure. Hence, the country has been experiencing minimal economic growth which has led it to be categorized as one of the least developed countries. Despite of the economic instability and socioeconomic issues, Haiti has continued to work on implementing mechanisms and policies to adapt to climate change.

In this context, Haiti has been granted with two Readiness and Preparatory Support projects which have helped the country to create resilience and adaptation to reduce vulnerability. The first Readiness project was focused on enhancing the institutional capacity of the National Designed Authority/Focal Point, strengthening national entities, and building financial management capacity to look for accreditation with the Green Climate Funding (GCF), while the second was providing support for the private sector to align the country programme with the national policies and needs taken into account. Therefore, this Readiness Project: Institutional Strengthening and Preparatory Support for the Republic of Haiti is looking for continuing the recommendations in the implementation process of the two last readiness projects. In addition, it will support ministerial institutions and organizations from the country in order to allow the country to manage climate risks. Furthermore, the project will increase the capacity of government personnel in the areas of international procurement, accounting, and monitoring and evaluation of process to accomplish the objectives of the GCF.

Activities under the project will pave the way for the successful implementation of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) (2016) which identifies adaptation priorities in integrated water resource management, coastal zone management and rehabilitation of infrastructure, food security, and, information, education and awareness. This initiative is also focused on integrating climate strategies and plans like the National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPA), and others. This project will strengthen the institutional capacity in project development and management, as well as, to support other national entities to develop a better financial management.
